Ilmenite

Chemical Formula: FeTiO₃

Ilmenite is an iron-titanium oxide mineral with the ideal formula FeTiO3 and is one of the world’s principal mineral sources of titanium. It occurs in mafic igneous rocks, magmatic Fe-Ti oxide deposits, and heavy-mineral placer deposits. Ilmenite may be mined for titanium feedstocks used to produce titanium dioxide pigment and, in some settings, titanium metal.

Deposit Types and Elements

These elements are often found is this element in the following Deposit Types:

Titanium (Ti)

Deposit Type: Magmatic Fe-Ti-V Oxide - Magmatic oxide deposits formed by concentrations of iron-, titanium-, and locally vanadium-bearing minerals.

Ilmenite is a principal titanium-bearing ore mineral in magmatic Fe-Ti oxide deposits.
