Thulium

Primary Applications

Portable X-ray sources, medical lasers, specialty ceramics, research

Mining Significance

Thulium is one of the least abundant naturally occurring rare earth elements and is recovered only in small quantities from mixed REE concentrates. It is not a standalone mining commodity; production depends on separation from minerals and process streams containing other heavy rare earths. Its scarcity and niche applications make it a high-value but very low-volume product.

Key Properties

  • Soft, silvery heavy rare-earth metal.
  • One of the least abundant stable lanthanides.
  • Commonly forms the +3 oxidation state.
  • Thulium-doped materials are used in selected laser systems.
  • Certain radioactive isotopes can serve as compact X-ray sources.
