Terbium

Primary Applications

High-temperature permanent magnets, green phosphors, magnetostrictive alloys, electronics

Mining Significance

Terbium is a valuable heavy rare earth typically recovered in small quantities from mixed rare-earth deposits, including xenotime and some ion-adsorption clay systems. It is not generally mined independently. Its low abundance and demanding separation from adjacent lanthanides make recovery dependent on efficient beneficiation, leaching, and high-selectivity solvent-extraction circuits.

Key Properties

  • Soft, silvery heavy rare-earth metal.
  • Strong green luminescence in many terbium compounds.
  • Used to improve high-temperature coercivity of NdFeB magnets.
  • Exhibits useful magnetostrictive behavior in specialized alloys.
  • Occurs at low concentrations with other heavy rare earths.
