Scandium

Primary Applications

Aluminum-scandium alloys, solid-oxide fuel cells, additive manufacturing, high-intensity lighting

Mining Significance

Scandium is rarely mined from a dedicated scandium mineral deposit. It is commonly dispersed at low concentrations in laterites, titanium minerals, rare-earth deposits, and industrial residues, and is typically considered a potential byproduct. Economic recovery depends on identifying a process stream in which scandium becomes sufficiently concentrated for selective leaching, purification, and precipitation.

Key Properties

  • Light, silvery transition metal with properties similar to aluminum and the rare earths.
  • Small additions to aluminum can improve strength, weldability, and grain refinement.
  • Scandia-stabilized zirconia has high ionic conductivity for solid-oxide fuel cells.
  • Relatively dispersed in the crust and rarely forms concentrated standalone ores.
  • Highly reactive metal that readily forms a protective oxide surface.
