Samarium

Primary Applications

Samarium-cobalt magnets, nuclear control materials, lasers, specialty glass

Mining Significance

Samarium is a rare earth element recovered from mixed REE minerals such as monazite and bastnäsite. It is not normally mined as a standalone commodity and must be separated from neighboring lanthanides through complex hydrometallurgical processing. Its high-value uses, particularly in samarium-cobalt magnets and neutron-absorbing applications, can contribute to the value of a diversified rare-earth product suite.

Key Properties

  • Silvery rare-earth metal that oxidizes gradually in air.
  • Samarium-cobalt alloys form strong magnets with excellent high-temperature stability.
  • Certain samarium isotopes absorb neutrons effectively.
  • Commonly occurs in the +3 oxidation state.
  • Occurs naturally mixed with other rare earth elements.
