Rhodium

Primary Applications

Automotive catalysts, chemical catalysts, high-temperature coatings, electrical contacts

Mining Significance

Rhodium is a scarce platinum-group metal recovered almost entirely as a coproduct during mining and refining of PGE ores. It occurs at very low concentrations in PGM-bearing magmatic deposits and is separated only after multiple concentration and refining stages. Its rarity, difficult separation chemistry, and dependence on broader PGM production make recovery efficiency and refinery capability especially important.

Key Properties

  • Very hard, silvery-white noble metal with exceptional corrosion resistance.
  • Highly reflective and resistant to tarnish.
  • High melting point and excellent high-temperature stability.
  • Powerful catalyst for nitrogen-oxide reduction in automotive catalysts.
  • Occurs naturally only in very low concentrations, generally with other PGMs.
