Praseodymium

Primary Applications

Nd-Pr permanent magnets, aerospace alloys, specialty glass, ceramics, pigments

Mining Significance

Praseodymium is a light rare earth element recovered principally from mixed rare-earth minerals such as bastnäsite and monazite. It is commonly marketed and processed together with neodymium in Nd-Pr products used for permanent magnets. Because it occurs with chemically similar lanthanides, separation relies on multi-stage hydrometallurgical circuits rather than simple physical beneficiation alone.

Key Properties

  • Soft, silvery rare-earth metal that oxidizes in air.
  • Commonly occurs in the +3 oxidation state.
  • Important component of high-strength rare-earth permanent magnets.
  • Forms alloys that can improve high-temperature performance.
  • Praseodymium compounds impart distinctive yellow-green colors to glass and ceramics.
