Neodymium

Primary Applications

NdFeB permanent magnets, electric motors, wind turbines, electronics, specialty glass

Mining Significance

Neodymium is one of the light rare earth elements (LREEs) and is rarely mined as a standalone commodity. Instead, it is recovered from rare earth minerals such as bastnäsite and monazite that contain multiple rare earth elements. Separating neodymium from the other rare earths requires complex mineral processing and solvent extraction circuits due to their nearly identical chemical properties. Because neodymium is the primary value driver in many rare earth deposits, its concentration and recovery have a significant impact on project economics. Demand for high-strength permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and advanced electronics has made neodymium recovery an increasingly important objective in modern rare earth mining and processing.

Key Properties

  • Strong magnetic properties when alloyed with iron and boron (NdFeB), producing the world’s most powerful permanent magnets.
  • High magnetic strength relative to size and weight.
  • Silvery-white rare earth metal that readily oxidizes in air; typically protected with coatings or alloyed for durability.
  • Relatively soft, malleable, and ductile metal.
  • Good alloying element for high-performance magnets and specialty materials.
  • Performs well over a broad temperature range, although high-temperature applications often require additional rare earth elements such as dysprosium or terbium.
  • Highly reactive; should be stored and processed to minimize oxidation.

Mining Targets

This element is often found in the following Deposit Types and Mineral targets.

Deposit Type: Carbonatite / Placer REE - REE mineralization associated with carbonatites and secondary placer concentrations of resistant REE-bearing minerals.

Mineral: Monazite - (Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO₄ - Monazite is an important rare-earth phosphate that commonly contains neodymium and occurs in primary deposits and heavy-mineral placers.
