Manganese

Primary Applications

Steelmaking, batteries, aluminum alloys, chemicals, fertilizers

Mining Significance

Manganese is mined from sedimentary, supergene-enriched, and other manganese deposits containing oxide and carbonate minerals. Pyrolusite is an important manganese oxide ore mineral, although commercial ores commonly contain several manganese phases. Most manganese consumption is tied to steelmaking, while battery-grade products require tighter control of impurities and additional chemical processing.

Key Properties

  • Hard, brittle transition metal rarely used in pure form.
  • Essential alloying and deoxidizing element in steelmaking.
  • Exhibits multiple oxidation states important in batteries and chemical processing.
  • Manganese oxides have strong redox activity.
  • Occurs in numerous oxide, carbonate, and silicate minerals.

Mining Targets

This element is often found in the following Deposit Types and Mineral targets.

Deposit Type: Marine Sedimentary / Supergene Manganese - Manganese deposits formed by marine sedimentary concentration and/or later supergene enrichment.

Mineral: Pyrolusite - MnO₂ - Pyrolusite is a major manganese oxide and the most common manganese ore mineral.
