Lutetium

Primary Applications

PET detector crystals, catalysts, specialty alloys, research

Mining Significance

Lutetium is one of the rarest and highest-value rare earth elements and is recovered only as a minor component of mixed REE ores. It is commonly associated with heavy rare-earth minerals such as xenotime and requires extensive separation to achieve high purity. Low natural abundance and difficult separation limit production volumes.

Key Properties

  • Dense, silvery heavy rare-earth metal.
  • Hardest and among the densest of the lanthanides.
  • Commonly forms the +3 oxidation state.
  • Lutetium-based scintillators are important in positron-emission tomography detectors.
  • Very low natural abundance increases separation and production cost.
