Holmium

Primary Applications

Specialty magnets, lasers, medical lasers, nuclear research

Mining Significance

Holmium is a low-abundance heavy rare earth recovered as a minor product from mixed rare-earth ores. It commonly occurs with other heavy REEs in minerals such as xenotime and monazite and requires advanced separation chemistry for purification. Because demand is specialized and volumes are small, holmium recovery is usually integrated into broader rare-earth refining operations.

Key Properties

  • Silvery rare-earth metal with one of the highest magnetic moments of any element.
  • Commonly forms the +3 oxidation state.
  • Holmium-doped materials are used in specialized solid-state lasers.
  • Strong neutron-absorption properties support selected nuclear applications.
  • Rarely concentrated enough to form a standalone mining target.
