Erbium

Primary Applications

Fiber-optic amplifiers, lasers, specialty glass, ceramics

Mining Significance

Erbium is a heavy rare earth generally recovered as a minor constituent of mixed REE ores, including xenotime and some rare-earth-bearing pegmatites and placers. Its separation from adjacent lanthanides requires multi-stage hydrometallurgical processing. Demand is driven particularly by optical and laser applications rather than bulk metal use.

Key Properties

  • Silvery heavy rare-earth metal that is relatively stable in dry air.
  • Erbium ions emit strongly near 1.55 micrometers, ideal for fiber-optic telecommunications.
  • Erbium compounds can impart a pink coloration to glass and ceramics.
  • Commonly occurs in the +3 oxidation state.
  • Occurs naturally dispersed with other heavy rare earth elements.
