Dysprosium

Primary Applications

High-temperature NdFeB magnets, electric motors, wind turbines, nuclear control materials

Mining Significance

Dysprosium is a heavy rare earth recovered from mixed REE resources such as xenotime and certain ion-adsorption deposits. It is typically present at much lower concentrations than light rare earths and is not mined as a standalone mineral commodity. Its ability to improve the high-temperature performance of NdFeB magnets makes efficient recovery and separation strategically important.

Key Properties

  • Bright, silvery heavy rare-earth metal.
  • Strong magnetic properties and high magnetic susceptibility.
  • Improves resistance to demagnetization in high-temperature permanent magnets.
  • Certain dysprosium compounds have strong neutron-absorption characteristics.
  • Occurs naturally with other heavy rare earth elements.
