Carbon

Primary Applications

Steelmaking, graphite electrodes, batteries, refractories, carbon materials

Mining Significance

Carbon is mined commercially mainly in mineral forms such as natural graphite, while other carbon resources include coal and diamond with very different markets and processing routes. For mineral-processing applications, natural graphite occurs in flake, amorphous, and vein deposits and must often be concentrated and purified. Battery anode markets have increased the importance of high-purity spherical graphite processing in addition to traditional refractory and industrial uses.
