Banded Iron Formation (BIF) / Superior-type Iron Formation

Banded iron formations (BIFs), including Superior-type iron formations, are extensive Precambrian sedimentary units characterized by alternating iron-rich and silica-rich layers. Magnetite and hematite are principal iron minerals, although mineralogy varies with alteration and metamorphism. These formations host many of the world’s major iron resources, including the taconite resources developed across Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range.
